What is Social Networking?

The 21st century is not called the Digital Age for nothing. Everything that we are familiar with today in terms of social media platforms 20 years ago was non-existent. There was no Facebook, there was no Twitter, heck there was no LinkedIn. This technology revolution has not only affected our personal lives but has stretched into the world of business as well. Because we have become so familiar with social media and connect with people every day when some people are asked what is social networking they have no clue and yet they do it every day.

So in this article we are going to be answering the question what is social networking and discussing its impact in our day-to-day lives.

Social Networking Defined

If you have ever asked, what is social networking? You are probably not alone. To put it in context social networking is not new to Man; in fact social networking has been going on for thousands of years before the advent of technology. Technology has just translated this act online and what people used to do without the aid of technology they can now do thanks to technology and social media platforms.

What is involved in social networking?

Social networking involves expanding one’s business contacts or individual connections using platforms that have been made available to you the user. This can happen in one of several ways on social networking sites.

Users may appear on your timeline as suggested people to network with because you share a mutual friend with someone already in your network; or you can meet people in groups that you share similar interests with. Another way of getting in touch with someone provided by some social media platforms is to directly contact someone.

All of these pathways may be followed in a bid to expand and get to know someone you otherwise might never had the chance and the opportunity to meet where it not for the social media platform.

The good that has come from social networking

We cannot explain what is social networking without discussing the good that has come from social networking online. Social networking allows you to connect with school friends, people you may have lost contact with over the years, people whose names may have changed, people outside of your own culture, home town, city and indeed country. You literally have the world at your fingertips and can access anyone at any time of the day. For those in businesses profitable relationships have been formed thanks to social networking especially those who run online shops and provide services online.

If you are not sure what is social networking and how you can use it for your own good, or if you are not yet convinced of its potential then take a look at the following statistics and judge for yourself.

The truth lies in the facts

  • More than 2.1 billion people have created social media accounts of which 1.7 billion are active accounts
  • Facebook has more than 1.4billion active users

  • There are 284 million users who are active on Twitter
  • Google+ has close to 363 million users to date
  • Instagram attracts a high number of young people with 53% of active users aged between 18-29 years
